As I mentioned before, I just signed a contract to begin a new job in Cheonan. As per usual, there was a teacher "bonding" trip and I was invited to go this past weekend. (FYI, all these pictures can be clicked to be made larger)
It was me, 7 Korean coworkers, and 1 other native English teacher (named Brad) all packed into a rented van that sat 10. Also, as per usual, Brad and I had no idea where we were going or what we would be doing. All we were told was "be at the school, in Cheonan, at 8:50 AM Saturday morning."
Seeing as it takes me about 2 hours to get to Cheonan, I went down there Friday night so I wouldn't have to begin my journey at 5:30AM. I wanted to check out the town anyway and I also got to meet a couple old Korean students I taught in the states. They showed me around and we had a nice dinner. Moral of this paragraph is that I really dig Cheonan and can't wait to live there.
After waking up on Saturday morning, I made my way to the school. Once there, we sat off on our great road trip adventure to the very southern tip of Korea. In fact, the place we went to was so southern that is was an island right off the coast.
Long car ride story short, we spent a lot of time driving. However, we did make a few stops to hike up a mountain to a beautiful temple, see some dinosaur footprints, and check out some nice scenery.
We then made our way to our hotel, which turned out to be the nicest hotel I have ever stayed in. It was really more of a condo. 3 bedrooms, a dinning room table, king sized beds, 3 bathrooms, and a kitchen. Luckily, I got a bed all to myself for the evening. The best part was the view from my room though (see above).
While I had a great time, sitting in that cramped van took it out of me. Being mashed against the wall of a car for hours is just never fun. Was seeing Tongyeong amazing? Absolutely. Was the car ride worth it? Nope. Would I go again? Yes, but not in a cramped van packed with people.
My advice, check out Tongyeong via a train or bus. It is a beautiful island with some of the most breathtaking views I have seen yet in Korea.
