The First Day

I actually did a little sleeping in this weekend and it was amazing. After losing my voice on Saturday, I needed it for sure. However I am happy to report that it is Monday today and my voice returned just in time to teach my first classes.

I will talk about teaching in a minute, but first I have to talk about E-Mart. To put it bluntly, Wal-Mart ain't got nothing on E-Mart. IT IS HUGE. What is E-Mart do you ask? Well E-Mart is the Korean version of Wal-Mart with far more merchandise for you to waste your money on. To really give a good impression of how big E-Mart is, take a Wal-Mart and Sam's Club and mash them together. BAM. You would have E-Mart. Regardless, it is a pretty cool place to get some shopping done.
Now, let's talk about teaching. I just taught 5 fifth grade classes. First of all, I forgot how young fifth graders are. Second, it really wasn't bad at all. I just did my introduction with my co-teacher, taught the kids how to make name tents, and then gave the floor to my co-teacher to give the kids a survey. I really hope the whole year goes like today. It would be a cake walk if it did.

I should also take this opportunity to mention my school lunches. In an effort to assimilate into this culture, I opted to eat lunch at school. This means that I am subject to whatever is cooked for any given day. So far, it hasn't been to bad. For 2000 won a day I get rice, soup, kimchi, and two side dishes that get weirder and weirder with each passing day. Maybe I will take a picture soon and share it with you all.

As for tonight, I have my welcoming dinner party. I hear your school will try and mess you up with booze, so I am going to take it easy. I'll report later on how it went.
